Welcome to the first ‘slightly tweaked’ Classic Truck. After speaking to lots of you, we’ll now be starting this section at 1970 and working up into the mid-1990s. As many of you said, the late 1960s/early 1970s seems to mark the start of the modern road haulage industry in Britain and so it makes a good cut-off point.

Welcome... Classic Truck - October 2010

From my own point of view, this change of dates allowed me to get a bit of personal nostalgia into this section with Bob Tuck’s feature on Len Janes’ BRS Eastern Region ERF. As you will read, this lorry was stationed in Lincoln for many years and in my youth I used to walk off down to that BRS depot and sit on the wall and watch the lorries trundle in and out. I’m bound to have seen this motor many times, and I can’t remember the last time I saw the BRS brown livery. Utterly fantastic! Now for a complete change of subject. A few years ago, long before I was involved with magazines, I patented a couple of security devices for lorries and trailers on behalf of the inventor, and then got involved with trying to sell them. Now although I really believed in these products, as hard as I tried, I just couldn’t seem to get that ‘breakthrough’ sale. This task wasn’t helped by the fact that I really don’t think I’m much of a salesman! I’ve just got to face the fact that although I can handle the technical stuff, I’m well out of my depth trying to sell things! However, there was one other thing that really hampered sales – the fact that the people selling trailers etc, didn’t want to point out security features, as that sort of thing was regarded as negative!

I thought this was quite odd as the thing that really attracted me to this job was that it was with security devices - a real plus point in my book. I’ve suffered from vehicle theft in the past and I can tell you that it definitely ruins your day! In fact, if it’s a vehicle you’ve restored over several years, it could almost ruin your life.

And so we decided this month to have a look at just some of the anti-theft devices available to protect your vehicle. Please have a look at the article - adding a bit of security to your classic doesn’t have to cost you a fortune, but it could save you from loads of aggravation.

Finally, in last month’s issue, I asked you what you thought of truck racing and whether you’d be interested in seeing that sort of thing featured in the magazine. The answer so far is no! So if you have strong feelings on this subject please let me know.

Cheers,
